Abstract.
In these lectures an outline is given of the close relationship between special functions and Lie group theory. In doing so the exposition is deliberately quite direct and hopefully clear. An attempt is made to give an outline of the state of the subject if only from the author's point of view. Principal references containing the important features of the subjet are also given.
